Vice Presidential Debate: Thursday

Due October 1st.

In preparation for the VP Presidential Debate between Palin (R) and Biden (D) we will discuss a few opinion / editorial articles. Select at least 2 articles...your choice. I selected 5 pieces (4 from conservative thinkers and one from a liberal thinker). As you read your selections consider:

What are the main points the author wants you to weigh? Faults or praise of the candidates, style, substance, records...

What evidence do they utilize to prove their points?

--------

As we watch the debates on Thursday night let's look for the issues that are pronounced in these op/eds. Did the candidate trascend the analysis...did they showcase or confirm the analysis?

Opening Act

20th Century Students:

Now that we got the course up and running I want to introduce you to academic blogging. I think some of you have experience with this and for others this may be brand new. In either case it is easy to do and can really be a valuable way of discussing and linking ideas. I would like to begin with a few questions regarding current events. For now you do not need to post anything. I am just going to use the blog for questions and information links.

Use this link to address #1: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/business/july-dec08/crisishistory_09-19.html

1. Last week was a rough one regarding our economy. Summarize what happened. Use the word "capitalism" in context in your answer.

2. What is the Bush Administration's answer to the above problem? Is this a departure from the "conservative agenda"(laissez faire policies, rugged individualism, small government)?

3. What questions would you like Obama and McCain to answer this Friday during the debate?
